Google's AI Overviews: how to appear as a source
The short answer
AI Overviews are the AI-written summary Google shows above some results, with links to the pages it used. To be one of those sources there are no extra requirements: your page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Everything else is good, ordinary SEO.
AI Mode is the full conversation with AI inside Google, and the same rules apply.
What Google says
- There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
- The page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet.
- No special structured data or new file for AI is needed.
- Traffic from these features counts in Search Console's Performance report, under the ‘Web’ search type.
In practice: if a page carries ‘noindex’, blocks snippets with ‘nosnippet’ or isn't indexed, it can't be a source.
How closely it follows normal rankings depends on the industry
BrightEdge measured how many AI Overview citations are also in the organic top 10. It varies a lot: 24.0% in health, 22.6% in B2B tech, 13.4% in e-commerce and 9.3% for restaurants (February 2026; the study doesn't give its country or sample size). Where the overlap is low, Google cites pages that don't rank near the top in normal results.
Local businesses: your Google profile matters
In AI answers about local businesses, Google Business Profile made up 28.63% of all citations in a BrightLocal study (August 2026, US, UK and Australia). We haven't seen a comparable study for other markets. Keep your profile complete and current either way: it's also what people see in Maps.
Common questions
Can I stop Google using my site in AI Overviews?
Yes. Since 31 August 2026 Search Console has a ‘Search generative AI’ setting in the property settings that takes the site out of AI Overviews and AI Mode without changing the rest of Search. ‘nosnippet’ and ‘max-snippet’ also limit what's shown, but they change how your page appears in normal results too.
Does Google-Extended take me out of AI Overviews?
No. Google-Extended controls whether your content is used to train Gemini; AI Overviews rely on Googlebot's normal crawling.
Where can I see the visits AI Overviews bring?
Clicks and impressions count in the Performance report, with the rest of web search. Since 31 August 2026 every site also has a generative AI report with impressions (no clicks) for those features.
