GEO vs SEO: what changes and what stays the same

The short answer

SEO is about ranking your pages in Google or Bing so people click. GEO is about AI assistants naming you, citing you and describing you correctly inside the answer. They share a foundation: a site that can be crawled, content that answers questions, and a reputation beyond your own site.

They work together: without technical SEO there's no GEO, and Google still brings almost all the traffic you can measure.

What doesn't change

Google says the same SEO practices apply to its AI features: crawling, indexing, helpful content, a good page experience. The other engines need to read your site too. A page that isn't indexed doesn't appear anywhere.

What does change

  • What others say counts for more. For recommendation questions, assistants rely mostly on third parties.
  • There's no position one. An answer includes you or it doesn't, and it changes; you measure in percentages and ranges.
  • Accuracy becomes a metric. AI can put you in the wrong town or offer something you stopped selling.

Rewriting tricks (‘add statistics and quotes’) gave gains of up to 40% in the 2024 GEO study, but on newer models most of them did nothing or made things worse (C-SEO Bench, 2025).

Common questions

Do I have to choose between SEO and GEO?

No. The technical work and the content serve both. What GEO adds is measuring AI answers and working on mentions beyond your site.

Is SEO going to disappear?

Nothing in today's data says so. In September 2026 Google still sent over 99% of the visits from the Google + ChatGPT pair in both the UK and the US (StatCounter).
